A direct-to-Stripe donation system that avoids third-party platforms
⌛ 5-6 Minute Read
It is possible to integrate Stripe as a donation system into any it'seeze website, all you need is an it'seeze website and a little bit of help. Here's how we did this recently for a charity customer we support.
Choosing the right platform is critical.
If you run a charity or non-profit and need a smooth way to accept donations online, you might assume you are locked into using expensive third-party platforms. While these platforms are popular, they often come with high platform fees or take a significant cut of your hard-earned donations.
There is a more cost-effective way.
There is another option that gives you full control, avoids costly monthly subscription fees, and looks entirely bespoke: Stripe.
We have proven this works.
We recently developed and launched a complete, streamlined donation system integrated into a customer's it'seeze website, they are a local community charity based in Dartford. Here is a look at how we achieved it, and how you can bring the same professional setup to your organisation.
Why Choose Stripe for Non-Profit Donations?
Traditional platforms eat into your revenue.
Most traditional fundraising platforms charge ongoing monthly fees or take a percentage platform cut on top of payment processing. Stripe flips the script. There is no monthly platform fee, you only pay standard transaction costs for checkout which are required by any payment gateway anyway. This ensures that the absolute maximum amount of every single donation goes directly toward your cause, and Stripe offers a fair market cost for transactions.
Strategic setup is required for success.
The trade-off is that Stripe is a powerful payment engine, not a dedicated charity platform. Out of the box, it requires careful configuration to handle charity-specific features like variable donation amounts and recurring giving tiers. However, when configured correctly, the end result is a polished, fully functional donation system that rivals any premium platform. Add some custom design into the website or branded widget integration and you will get a very simple, affordable and effective working system.
Designing the Ultimate Donation Strategy
To build a user-friendly donation page, the setup needs to cater to both one-off supporters and long-term, regular donors. Here is how the infrastructure was built to provide a seamless user experience.
1. Setting Up One-Off Donations
Giving donors flexibility and ease of use can boosts contributions.
Standard payment pages usually force people to pay a fixed price. To turn Stripe into a true fundraising tool, we set it up so supporters can choose and type in exactly what they want to give.
We engineered five preset choices for easy giving.
To make it as simple as possible for donors to choose a starting point, it's best practice to offer preset amounts alongside a custom box. Because of certain standard limitations in Stripe, we engineered a custom designed card-based layout on this particular website. This gives your donors a clear, visual choice of our five preset amounts for £10, £20, £25, £50, and £100, as well as an option to choose their own amount, which instantly sends them straight to a fast, branded checkout page.
Best of all, we can turn the code generated by Stripe into a flexible website block, meaning these donation cards can be placed easily into any section or page across your entire site.
2. Capturing Vital Gift Aid Declarations
Donors just click a box to boost their gift.
Because Stripe doesn't have a "Gift Aid" button built into it, we added a simple dropdown choice right onto the checkout page. When a supporter is making a donation, they just select a choice that says "Yes, I am a UK taxpayer." or "no thanks"
Claiming the extra money is incredibly easy.
By making that quick choice a part of the checkout, the system automatically collects everything the charity needs. The person donating doesn’t have to fill out any extra paperwork, and the charity can effortlessly claim back that extra 25% from HMRC.
3. Setting Up Monthly Recurring Donations (Subscriptions)
Having regular income can secure your charity's future.
Securing predictable, monthly recurring donors is the ultimate goal for non-profits. We implemented a subscription-style model that lets people sign up for automatic monthly giving. Creating this in Stripe meant setting up new subscription products that we could integrate into a pricing table. We then used that code to create a custom website block, or "widget," allowing the monthly giving table to be added seamlessly into any section or page of the website.
We changed the text to create a real human connection.
When we set up the monthly recurring donation tables, we chose three giving levels: £10, £25, and £50. But instead of just showing simple price tags, we rewrote the headlines to show exactly what that money achieves. For example, the £10 tier became "Support a Young Person," the £25 tier was named "Fund a Workshop," and the £50 tier became "Sponsor a Programme." This makes the donation appeal directly to regular people and corporate businesses because they can see the real-world impact of their money, turning a simple payment table into a powerful storytelling tool on the website.
Activating the Payment Gateways
Offering multiple payment choices helps donors with a seamless checkout
Stripe provide multiple payment gateways, which you can switch on and sync with your relevant account. When a supporter arrives at your checkout page, they should be able to pay exactly how they want. To make donating as effortless as possible, we configured the system to accept a vast array of global payment gateways and local methods:
Credit & Debit Cards: Full, built-in support for Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
Mobile Wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay activate automatically depending on the device your donor is using, allowing them to pay securely with a single touch.
Bank Schemes: BACS Direct Debit is enabled for regular, reliable monthly contributions directly from a donor's bank account.
Alternative Networks: Open banking solutions like Onelink are connected to give supporters even more secure, real-time ways to give.
PayPal Integration: If your non-profit operates a PayPal business account, this can also be easily switched on and synchronized right through the central Stripe dashboard to offer total coverage.
Modern payment options are essential for modern users. Providing diverse payment choices ensures you accommodate every type of donor preference, from mobile wallets to direct bank schemes.
We can also integrate Stripe as part of an E-Commerce shop with our Lightning Shop platform.
Donation Widgets from Stripe to your it'seeze Website
Converting Stripe code into a handy donation widget block
Once your recurring donation tables and individual one-off donation links are fully configured in the Stripe backend, the platform generates a block of raw embed code. Simply pasting this raw code into a standard website text box rarely works or looks right, which is why we handle the heavy lifting and build a custom widget for you.
Your online donation widget is flexible
To achieve a seamless finish, we take that raw data and code straight from Stripe and pass it over to our technical team. We then convert it into dedicated, easy-to-use "widgets" visual blocks built specifically for both your one-off and recurring donation systems.
Your online donation widget is portable
Because these custom website blocks are entirely self-contained, they are incredibly versatile and can be placed absolutely anywhere across your website:
On Your Main Donation Page: Display your complete recurring giving table side-by-side with your real-world impact statistics.
On Your About Page: Visitors often head here second to learn more about your mission, making it the perfect strategic home for a clear donation call-to-action.
On Your Service Pages: Highlight a quick, one-off giving button that stays cleanly visible and accessible as supporters browse your site.
In High-Traffic Blog Posts: Drop a friendly, engaging donation call-out right at the bottom of an inspiring story or real-world case study.
Overcoming the Technical Hurdles
Standard tools need expert workarounds.
Whilst Stripe is incredibly robust, making it behave like a dedicated charity platform requires a few clever workarounds:
Tailoring the language helps. Standard subscription layouts often display text like "Subscribe" rather than "Donate". We bypassed this by injecting custom styling overrides directly into the website's frontend to keep the language entirely focused on giving.
A strong grid layout is vital. Creating a unified page that beautifully balances one-off payment cards, and recurring giving tables requires an editor that can cleanly display embedded blocks without breaking the mobile responsiveness.
The final result speaks for itself.
The final result for our charity project was a professional donor system that allows them to process multiple payment methods for one-off or recurring transactions, and it's all neatly set up with zero ongoing platform fees.
